gridSetup.sh -switchGridHome fails with PRVG-2031 : Owner of file “<GRID_HOME>/bin/oradism” did not match the expected value on node

Problem

While trying to switch to a Grid Home, the process failed with the following error:

[grid@c03db01 ~]$ /u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_1/gridSetup.sh -silent -switchGridHome
Launching Oracle Grid Infrastructure Setup Wizard...

[grid@c03db01 ~]$

This issue can occur if we previously changed the permissions of the affected Grid Home in any way, which could be manually or after some failed lock/unlock operation from root.sh script.

Note we have 2 related issues here:

Issue 1:

PRVG-2031 : Owner of file “/u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_2/bin/oradism” did not match the expected value on node “c03db01”. [Expected = “root(0)” ; Found = “grid(54322)”]

Issue 2:

Since this is wrong only in the node 1, this has triggered another error because the file permissions doesn’t match between all the nodes.

PRVG-2027 : Owner of file “/u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_2/bin/oradism” is inconsistent across nodes. [Found = “grid(54322):[c03db01], root(0):[c03db03,c03db02,c03db06,c03db05,c03db04]” on Nodes = “c03db06,c03db05,c03db04,c03db03,c03db02,c03db01”]

Therefore, if the owner and permissions were not in the expected configuration, but all the nodes had incorrect settings, this should only trigger the first error.

Solution

To fix this, we need to change the owner of the affected file oradism to root.oinstall and set the permissions to 4750:

[root@c03db01 ~]# chown root.oinstall /u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_2/bin/oradism
[root@c03db01 ~]# chmod 4750 /u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_2/bin/oradism

And now the switchGiHome should works if you have no other issue in the Grid Home:

[root@c03db01 ~]# su - grid
[grid@c03db01 ~]$
[grid@c03db01 ~]$
[grid@c03db01 ~]$ /u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_1/gridSetup.sh -silent -switchGridHome
Launching Oracle Grid Infrastructure Setup Wizard...

As a root user, run the following script(s):
        1. /u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_1/root.sh

Run /u01/app/23.0.0.0/grid_1/root.sh on the following nodes:
[c03db03, c03db02, c03db01, c03db06, c03db05, c03db04]

Run the scripts on the local node first. After successful completion, run the scripts in sequence on all other nodes.

Successfully Setup Software.
